Deterring Bears from Your Home
Bears can be a big issue for houses in Tahoe. Bears are attracted to the easy food supplies that houses offer, and end up doing plenty of damage when they get inside. If you’ve ever come back to your home to discover this situation, you’ll know that repairs can quickly become costly!
ELECTRIC DETERRENT
Encouraging bears to bypass your home can be a challenge. If you’ve found other methods to be ineffective, it may be time to consider installing an electric deterrent system on your home.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We start by installing a controller, generally at your front door. We then run 2 black insulated wires from the controller all around your house, generally stapled to the siding – think of the black wire for your cable TV. When the wires get to your windows and doors, the wires are exposed: if a bear comes sniffing, he or she gets a zap and moves along!
WHY IS ELECTRIC DETERRENT A GOOD IDEA?
Electric deterrent systems are the surest (albeit not guaranteed) defense against bears. Bears are smart, and learn to avoid defended homes!
ELECTRIC DETERRENT SYSTEMS SAVE BEARS’ LIVES!
On average, between 50 and 100 'problem' bears are killed every year in the state of California, but remember — by and large, people actually create problem bears by teaching them that our homes, garbage cans, back porches, cars, etc., are a good and easy source for food. Electric deterrent systems are a powerful lesson that our homes are NOT for them!
WILL IT SHOCK PEOPLE? PETS? KIDS?
Absolutely. It’s important to be very clear about this -- the exposed wires will make anyone or anything jump and yelp if they are touched. The good thing is that everyone remembers NOT to touch them again! Getting a shock won’t do lasting damage to grown-ups, kids or pets. In fact, the Bear League recommends these products, and they certainly wouldn’t recommend anything that would do lasting damage to a bear!
Electric systems like these have been widely used with livestock for years. You have an on/off switch that is easy to operate, and we put a bright yellow warning sign on the wires at the doors, but it is ultimately up to you to be responsible for safely operating your system. That might mean only having it on when you're away, or only turning it on at night, once everyone’s inside.
HOW BIG IS THE SHOCK?
Well, it made me jump and yelp!
Remember, always take the steps you can to discourage bears from thinking your home is a good supply of food. Our objective is to have a healthy relationship with bears, but that relationship isn’t supposed to occur in your back yard…or your kitchen!

TESTIMONIALS:
"I had a great experience working with Darryl - he and his workers were very accommodating, trying to make sure that I was protected as soon as possible from the bears that had been terrorizing me in my home for about 6 months. Since having the bear wiring, there have been multiple incidents in my neighborhood of people getting their houses broken into and my house hasn’t been touched a single time. I can finally sleep through the night!" -Emily
"We have a potential bear problem at our home and was lucky enough to contact Darryl at Tahoe Bear Fences. He analyzed the problem areas and installed the necessary cords where needed. He did a wonderful job concealing the necessary wiring around the rock siding on our home. We would highly recommend Darryl at Tahoe Bear Fences." -Ralph
“Darryl was referred to me by a very reputable contractor and the end result was my finding not only a great contractor but a good friend..Darryl has always responded in a very fair and equitable way.” - Bill
